Why Do Some Choirs Require Auditions?

If you've ever attended a Northern Trails Vocal Connection concert or visited our website, you may have noticed that we are an auditioned choir.

That often leads to a natural question:

Why do choirs hold auditions in the first place?

For some people, the word audition can sound intimidating. It brings to mind talent shows, high-pressure performances, and judges holding scorecards.

In reality, choir auditions are usually much simpler than that.

More importantly, auditions are not about deciding who is "good enough" to sing. They are about building an ensemble that can perform challenging music, blend effectively, and create the best possible experience for both singers and audiences.

What's the Difference Between an Auditioned Choir and a Community Choir?

Both auditioned choirs and community choirs play an important role in the musical world.

Community choirs are designed to be welcoming and accessible. They provide opportunities for people of many backgrounds and experience levels to enjoy singing together. For many singers, they are a wonderful introduction to choral music.

An auditioned choir has a different goal.

Rather than focusing primarily on participation, auditioned choirs focus on achieving a particular artistic standard. This often allows them to perform more complex repertoire, explore a wider variety of musical styles, and tackle music that requires greater independence from each singer.

Neither approach is better than the other. They simply serve different purposes.

What Happens During a Choir Audition?

Many first-time singers are surprised by how straightforward choir auditions actually are.

A conductor may ask a singer to perform a prepared piece, sing a few vocal exercises, match pitches, or demonstrate basic music-reading skills. The exact process varies from choir to choir.

The purpose is not to find flawless singers.

Instead, auditions help the conductor understand a singer's voice, musical strengths, vocal range, and where they might fit within the ensemble.

Think of it less as a test and more as a conversation about musical fit.

Why Are Auditions Important?

A choir may look like a group of individuals, but musically it functions as a single instrument.

Just as an orchestra requires the right balance of strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion, a choir requires balance between sopranos, altos, tenors, and basses.

Auditions help create that balance.

They allow a conductor to build sections that blend well together, support one another, and contribute to the overall sound of the ensemble.

Without that balance, even talented singers can struggle to create the unified sound audiences expect from a high-level choir.

Auditions Allow Choirs to Perform More Challenging Music

Many of the most rewarding choral works require singers to do much more than follow a melody.

Individual sections may sing completely different musical lines. Harmonies can become complex. Rhythms may overlap. Some pieces divide into six, eight, or even more independent parts.

When singers enter rehearsals with strong foundational skills, the choir can spend less time learning basic notes and rhythms and more time exploring interpretation, expression, and musical storytelling.

That opens the door to a much wider range of repertoire.

Auditions Build Trust Within the Ensemble

One benefit of auditions that audiences rarely see is the trust they create among choir members.

Every singer knows that the people around them have demonstrated similar levels of commitment and preparation. That shared foundation allows the choir to work efficiently and confidently.

Singers can focus on listening, blending, and making music together rather than worrying about whether the ensemble can handle the material.

Over time, that trust becomes part of the choir's sound.

What Does This Mean for the Audience?

When audiences attend a concert, they are usually not thinking about auditions.

They are listening for beautiful music.

Yet many of the qualities listeners appreciate most, balanced sections, clear harmonies, precise entrances, expressive phrasing, and a unified choral sound, are supported by the audition process.

The goal is not perfection.

The goal is to create an ensemble capable of communicating music in a powerful and meaningful way.

Why Northern Trails Vocal Connection Holds Auditions

At Northern Trails Vocal Connection, auditions help us build an ensemble that can bring challenging and inspiring music to life.

They help us maintain balance across all voice parts, prepare ambitious repertoire, and create the level of musical excellence our singers and audiences expect.

Most importantly, auditions help ensure that every member of the choir is positioned to succeed and contribute to something larger than themselves.

Because great choral music is never about a single voice.

It is about many voices working together to create something that none of them could create alone.
